A new survey revealed young Americans are more than twice as likely to consume cannabis than cigarettes, based on an examination of the most recent Gallup poll data.
The study found that the percentage of adults aged 18 to 29 who reported smoking cigarettes in the preceding week fell to a record low of 12% in 2019–2022, from 15% in 2016–2018, while the percentage of adults in the same age range who reported using cannabis rose to 26%, also an all-time high.
Gallup found that between 2019 and 2022, an average of 27% of U.S. adults engaged in at least one form of tobacco use (cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco, e-cigarettes) or cannabis use. Among those people, 7% reported exclusively using cannabis, 9% reported just smoking cigarettes, and 3% reported only using electronic cigarettes.
However, while young Americans are more likely to use any type of smoking or vaping product, they are also more likely to use only cannabis rather than tobacco.
While the percentage of adults who smoke cigarettes has decreased steadily over the past two decades, there are still more Americans aged 30–49 who consume cigarettes solely (11%) than cannabis (8%).
