Mississippi Launches Medical Cannabis Research Program at Ole Miss

Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves (R) signed a bill establishing the Mississippi Medical Cannabis Research Program at the University of Mississippi. This new initiative is set to explore the safety, efficacy, and therapeutic potential of medical cannabis for patients with various medical conditions.

The program will provide funding and resources to researchers at Ole Miss’s School of Pharmacy, enhancing their ability to conduct scientific investigations and develop educational programs related to medical cannabis. Robert Welch, director of the National Center for Cannabis Research and Education (NCCRE) at the university, hailed the program as a significant step forward. “The establishment of the program represents a tremendous opportunity to advance scientific knowledge, improve patient care, and ultimately enhance the well-being of individuals across our state and the nation,” Welch said.

Operating under the NCCRE, which was launched in January, the new program aims to maintain Mississippi’s leadership in natural products research. State Senator Nicole Boyd (R), a sponsor of the bill, emphasized that the NCCRE’s work will ensure Mississippi remains at the forefront of cannabis research.

The University of Mississippi has a long history in cannabis research, having held the only federal license to cultivate cannabis for over 50 years through the National Institute on Drug Abuse Drug Supply Program.
