Kentucky is taking a significant step toward launching its medical program as patient certifications open on December 1, according to WLKY. During last week’s Team Kentucky update, Gov. Andy Beshear confirmed the launch of a webpage at kymedcan.ky.gov to connect patients with over 150 authorized healthcare providers.
Certified patients can begin applying for medical ID cards on January 1, but it remains uncertain whether products will be available by then. The lottery for some retail licenses is set for December 16, with additional announcements expected this week.
Gov. Beshear’s 2022 executive order allowed certain individuals to possess and use products from states with legal access, but this created uneven policies across the state’s hospitals. The newly approved legislation, signed into law on March 31, 2023, aims to establish a more consistent system, although it prohibits smokable products while allowing edibles and concentrates.
The program’s qualifying conditions include cancer, severe pain, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, PTSD, and other chronic or debilitating conditions. The Kentucky Center for Cannabis Research may expand this list over time.
With certifications underway and infrastructure developing, Kentucky is set to join other states in providing legal access to medical patients.
