Alabama State University Launches Cannabis Education Certificate Programs

Alabama State University (ASU), a historically Black college and university (HBCU), has announced the launch of cannabis education certificate programs. These programs will cover topics such as Cannabis Healthcare and Medicine, Cannabis Agriculture and Horticulture, the Business of Cannabis, Cannabis Compliance and Risk Management, and Cannabis Product Development and Design.

ASU becomes one of only two schools in Alabama offering cannabis-related courses, joining Jacksonville State University. It also joins Clark Atlanta University and Medgar Evers College as the only HBCUs providing a cannabis certificate or a cannabis-focused minor, respectively.

The university has partnered with Green Flower, a cannabis education and training company, to offer the online certificate programs. Each program takes six months to complete and costs $500 per month, according to ASU’s website.

While Alabama legalized medical cannabis in 2021, patients have yet to access products due to ongoing legal challenges and regulatory issues. The Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission (AMCC) has faced lawsuits over alleged scoring inconsistencies, accusations of violating open meeting laws, and multiple licensing setbacks.
