Half of Utah Voters Support Adult-Use Cannabis Legalization

A public opinion poll conducted earlier this month in Utah found that half of the state’s voters support fully legalizing adult-use cannabis, according to a report by FOX 13.

The poll, commissioned by the Utah Patients Coalition and conducted by Noble Predictive Insights, shows that about 50% of Utah voters are in favor of legalizing adult-use cannabis. In contrast, 38% of voters believe that only medical cannabis should be available, 9% support full prohibition, and 3% were unsure. Support for adult-use cannabis was highest among younger voters (60%) and lowest among those aged 65+ (29%), with middle-aged voters nearly evenly split on the issue (49% in favor).

Desiree Hennessy, Executive Director of the Utah Patients Coalition, expressed surprise at the level of support for recreational cannabis. “We’re not even just talking patients. We’re talking Utahns who are up for a recreational or adult-use market in Utah,” Hennessy said.

Utah legalized medical cannabis in 2018, though the state’s first dispensaries didn’t open until 2020. Despite the legal framework, a recent study found that about 60% of medical cannabis patients in Utah still obtain their cannabis from out-of-state or illicit sources.
