Historic Opening of The Great Smoky Cannabis Company North Carolina’s Only Legal Dispensary

The Great Smoky Cannabis Company, the pioneering cannabis dispensary owned and operated by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, officially opened its doors this past weekend in the Qualla Boundary, North Carolina. The grand opening attracted hundreds of eager customers, all aged 21 or older, who lined up for the historic event.

This landmark opening marks a significant shift in cannabis policy for the region. Until recently, the dispensary exclusively served members of the tribe with medical cannabis recommendations. However, following a September 2023 vote by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians to legalize adult-use cannabis and subsequent regulatory approval in June 2024, the dispensary is now open to a broader public audience.

Forrest Parker, General Manager of Qualla Enterprises, emphasized the strong community support for adult-use cannabis, citing recent polls that show 70-80% approval rates across North Carolina. Despite this widespread support, cannabis remains illegal elsewhere in the state, with recent legislative efforts falling short of comprehensive reform.

The Great Smoky Cannabis Company, located in a renovated bingo hall within the Qualla Boundary, stands as North Carolina’s sole legal retail cannabis outlet. This development highlights a significant contrast with the state’s broader legislative landscape, where efforts to advance cannabis reforms have met resistance.

The establishment of The Great Smoky Cannabis Company not only provides legal access to tested and regulated cannabis products but also underscores the growing movement towards broader acceptance and reform within the state.
