Ohio’s Adult-Use Cannabis Market Poised for Mid-June Launch as Regulations Progress

Ohio’s journey towards launching its adult-use cannabis market received a significant boost this week as lawmakers advanced proposed regulations in the Joint Committee on Agency Rule Review, according to a report by the Associated Press.

Following last year’s voter-approved cannabis legalization proposal, which came into effect in December, adults aged 21 and older were granted the rights to possess, consume, and cultivate cannabis at home. However, the legislation also mandated the establishment of a fully operational and regulated adult-use market by September 7, a deadline that lawmakers have diligently worked towards in recent months.

The proposed regulations outline a dual-licensing program, allowing existing medical cannabis dispensaries to extend their services to the new adult-use market. With the regulations progressing on Monday, it is anticipated that the application period for dual licenses enabling adult-use sales could commence as early as June 7.

Tom Haren, spokesperson for the Ohio Cannabis Coalition, expressed confidence in the readiness of medical dispensaries to transition into dual licensees. “Our members have obviously been anticipating the rollout of adult-use sales,” Haren stated. “They’ve been working on getting processes in place, making whatever changes they need to procedures. We’re really excited,” he added.

Governor Mike DeWine (R) had previously advocated for allowing medical dispensaries to serve adult-use customers, underscoring the bipartisan support for advancing Ohio’s cannabis industry.

The progression of regulations marks a significant milestone in Ohio’s cannabis journey, promising new economic opportunities and expanded access for consumers. As the state prepares to usher in this transformative change, stakeholders eagerly anticipate the forthcoming launch of adult-use sales, poised to reshape Ohio’s cannabis landscape.
