The University of Mississippi has unveiled a cutting-edge online graduate program focused on medical cannabis and dietary supplements. Leveraging the expertise of the School of Pharmacy’s National Center for Natural Products Research and the recently established National Center for Cannabis Research and Education, the program marks a significant stride in advancing education in these evolving industries.
The National Center for Cannabis Research and Education, initiated in 2021, has positioned the university at the forefront, holding the exclusive federal license for over 50 years to cultivate cannabis through the National Institute on Drug Abuse Drug Supply Program.
Dean Donna Strum highlighted the program’s potential to create a pathway for individuals seeking to enhance their careers in the rapidly expanding medical cannabis and dietary supplements sectors. With the industries experiencing significant growth, the program aims to equip the workforce with comprehensive knowledge and skills essential for effective contributions.
Program organizer and Department of BioMolecular Sciences professor David Colby emphasized the distinctive nature of the initiative. Unlike existing programs primarily focused on healthcare professionals managing patient care, this program delves into a broader spectrum. It covers chemistry, biology, toxicology, plant genomics, formulation, manufacturing, and regulation, catering to individuals aspiring to work directly in these industries.
