Retailers in Arkansas recorded over $22.4 million in medical cannabis sales for May – an average of about $724,200 spent daily across 38 dispensaries in the state.
According to a spokesperson for the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration (DFA), May sales were lower than April, which brought in $24 million.
Patients in Arkansas spend an average of $22.37 million every month to acquire 3,920 pounds of medical cannabis, according to Scott Hardin, a spokesperson for the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration.
Hardin said, “Although sales in May were slightly lower than April, the state surpassed a significant milestone as more than 100,000 pounds of medical marijuana have been sold since the first dispensary opened in May 2019,” Hardin said, adding that patients collectively purchased 3,917 pounds of cannabis in May alone, bringing the total number of pounds purchased since 2019 to 102,710.”
The 4/20 holiday was one factor that may have contributed to the medical cannabis sales increase in April.
According to an article from Ganjapeneur, “Earlier this month, the campaign seeking to legalize cannabis for adult use in the state submitted 100,000 more signatures than required to put the issue to voters in November. The signatures have yet to be verified by the secretary of state’s office. To get the question on ballots, the campaign needs 89,151 signatures.”
The amount of signatures indicates a positive change in public opinion when it comes to cannabis in Arkansas. With a higher demand for medical cannabis and the likelihood of adult-use legalization on the horizon, it seems that dispensaries in the state will continue to see sales growth in the coming months.
If the adult-use reforms are approved, Arkansas’ state medical cannabis tax would be eliminated but the same tax rates – a 6.50% sales tax and 4% excise tax – would be applied to adult-use sales.
The tax revenue from the sales are used for the state’s general revenues and other budgets such as a stipend for law enforcement and health care research.
