A recent study conducted by researchers at Toronto Metropolitan University has revealed that marijuana can significantly enhance the enjoyment of music, corroborating a common observation among cannabis consumers. The study concluded that “the impact of cannabis on the auditory experience may be overall enhanced” compared to sober listening.
The research involved a group of 104 participants, who were recruited through the university and via flyers at 38 marijuana retailers in and around Toronto. The participants completed an online questionnaire, and 15 individuals participated in hour-long Zoom interviews.
Findings indicated that individuals reported “significantly higher levels of state music absorption” while under the influence. Notably, 50% of participants claimed to experience improved hearing sensitivity when high, and 60% felt that marijuana generally affected their hearing.
Listening to music emerged as the most popular activity for participants while high, with 45% choosing it over other activities such as watching videos or podcasts. Participants also reported increased attention to auditory stimuli and a deeper emotional connection to the music. One participant noted, “When I’m high, I can definitely lie down and listen to music for awhile,” highlighting the immersive experience enhanced by marijuana.
The study categorized the reflections into four main themes: altered cognitive processes, auditory perceptual effects, emotional openness, and embodiment. Participants expressed feelings of deeper appreciation and enhanced rhythmic perception, often leading to a desire to dance and physically respond to the music.
While the research aligns with previous studies dating back to the 1970s, this study stands out as the first mixed-methods retrospective examination of how marijuana influences hearing and musical enjoyment. The authors emphasized that the findings warrant further exploration through experimental studies.
In addition to this music-focused research, recent studies have also explored the neurological effects of marijuana, including how it stimulates appetite, as revealed by a study from Washington State University. The ongoing exploration of marijuana’s impact continues to challenge conventional wisdom and may lead to innovative therapeutic applications.
As cannabis culture and research evolve, the insights from this study contribute valuable knowledge to the understanding of the relationship between marijuana and sensory experiences, particularly in the realm of music.
