Florida Voters Favor Cannabis Legalization Amendment, Poll Shows

In a recent poll conducted by FOX News and published on June 6, it was found that a significant majority of Florida voters are in favor of legalizing cannabis for adult recreational use. According to the poll, 66% of respondents indicated they would vote in favor of the proposed constitutional amendment in the upcoming November election, with only 32% opposed.

Support for the amendment cuts across party lines, with 76% of Democrats, 71% of independents, and even 57% of Republicans expressing their support. This bipartisan backing marks a notable shift towards cannabis reform in Florida.

Chris Cano, founder of Suncoast NORML, highlighted the growing bipartisan support, stating in an interview with FOX 13, “It’s promising to see cannabis reform finally becoming a bipartisan issue.” Cano emphasized the benefits of regulated cannabis, including economic boosts and improved access for patients.

Despite the strong voter support among Republicans, the Republican Party of Florida’s Executive Board has taken a stance against the amendment. This opposition contrasts with the broader Republican voter sentiment as reflected in the poll.

Earlier polling by USA TODAY in April showed that 49% of respondents supported cannabis reforms, with 36% opposed, indicating a growing trend of acceptance towards legalization.

If passed, the amendment would legalize cannabis for adults aged 21 and older, permitting existing medical cannabis dispensaries in Florida to serve adult-use customers. It also sets possession limits at 3 ounces of flower and five grams of concentrate products. However, the amendment requires a supermajority of 60% voter support to become law.

Florida voters will decide the fate of the cannabis legalization amendment in the upcoming November elections.
