New research published in the journal Clinical Advances in Dental Medicine and Oral Health has revealed promising results for a mouthwash containing cannabidiol (CBD) and spilanthol, a botanical extract. The study suggests that this innovative mouthwash can help promote oral health, reduce plaque buildup, control bacteria, and reduce inflammation, all while offering potential benefits beyond oral care.
The study involved 40 patients who used a mouthwash infused with CBD oil, tea tree oil, and spilanthol, a fatty acid extracted from the Acmella oleracea plant. Researchers compared this CBD-infused mouthwash to a standard mouthwash containing only tea tree oil and found that the CBD formulation was significantly more effective at reducing plaque and oral bleeding, two common symptoms of gingivitis.
According to the study’s authors, CBD and spilanthol’s anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties make them an effective combination for promoting oral health. The mouthwash also helped maintain “homeostasis of the oral microbiome,” reducing harmful bacteria that can affect periodontal health.
The researchers highlighted that prolonged oral inflammation can lead to serious health risks, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and complications during pregnancy. By addressing inflammation in the mouth, this CBD-spilanthol mouthwash could potentially have wider health implications beyond dental care.
Spilanthol, known for its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, has been previously linked to promoting saliva production and addressing fungal infections. CBD, on the other hand, is well-recognized for its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties, making it a multifaceted therapeutic agent.
While the research is promising, it has limitations, including a small sample size and failure to account for other risk factors like nicotine use or diabetes. However, the findings still offer strong evidence for the potential benefits of CBD and spilanthol in oral health products.
The authors of the study also pointed to another benefit: the CBD and spilanthol mouthwash could be particularly useful in preventing and managing biofilms—a sticky, bacterial film that can form on the surfaces of teeth. Previous studies have demonstrated CBD’s ability to disrupt biofilms, offering a new approach to reducing bacterial growth and preventing oral infections.
This study adds to a growing body of research showing the potential of CBD in various health-related applications, from oral care to wound healing and even skincare. The multifaceted properties of CBD and its ability to address both oral and systemic health issues make it an exciting area for further research and product development.
As CBD and other natural ingredients continue to gain attention in the wellness market, this research suggests that CBD-infused mouthwash could become a valuable tool in maintaining oral health, providing an alternative to traditional oral care products.
