How to Start a Cannabis Business
Sparky Rose

12pm – 12:50pm

Despite Florida withdrawing a highly popular legalization initiative, cannabis referendums remain a top voter priority in no less than 12 states, either in medical or adult recreational form. Can or should Illinois be the model in approach and scope as New York and New Jersey again front burner their programs? As more states allow access, local investment opportunities will become evident. Yet a key driver, institutional participation, will continue at a passive pace until full federal legalization. Unless the genuine concerns around banking and / or rescheduling are finally addressed, issues that Illinois faced during roll out or issues that continue to persist in California will grind on. Meanwhile any legislative or banking quagmires help feed the need for a street market. Ultimately these issues will conclude so how can industry participants protect the moat while remaining positioned for growth and opportunity? Join us for industry perspectives and projections, shared from our business and personal cannabis involvement and experiences.

Cannabis as a Treatment for Chronic Pain and other Concerns for Women
Mauricio Consalter, MD and Rebecca Jeffers

2:00pm – 2:50pm

“According to the CDC, in 2016, an estimated 20.4% of U.S. adults had chronic pain and 8% of US Adults had high-impact chronic pain, with higher prevalence associated with advancing age. That is about 69.6 million US adults experiencing unrelenting pain.

Pain conditions affecting women have a significant global impact. Yet there is still a lack of awareness/recognition of pain issues affecting women. Chronic pain affects a higher proportion of women than men around the world; however, women are less likely to receive treatment. Research has shown that women generally experience more recurrent pain, more severe pain, and longer lasting pain than men. Fibromyalgia, a condition characterized by chronic widespread pain, is significantly more prevalent in women than in men with 80-90% of diagnosed cases being women. Other conditions that disproportionately impact women include Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Osteoarthritis, TMJ, chronic pelvic pain, and migraine headaches.

Many common western treatments for pain can wreak havoc on the body. Cannabis is a safe and effective alternative to pharmaceutical painkillers such as opiates and nerve pills. Women who use cannabis to treat their chronic pain conditions report decreased depression and anxiety that is commonly associated with chronic pain and an overall improved sense of wellbeing. Medical cannabis has already improved the quality of life for countless women around the globe and will continue to provide lasting relief as access to this plant continues to improve and more research is done to prove its efficacy.”

As more states join the legalization movement, an increasing number of cannabis retailers and cultivators alike are interested in capitalizing off of this nascent industry.
