Poll Show Support for Legalization Referendum in MD

Poll Confirms Support for Marijuana Legalization Referendum in Maryland

A majority of Republicans, according to a new poll, are ready to vote yes on legalizing marijuana in Maryland according to an article in Marijuana Moment.

There are initiatives for cannabis reform on the ballot in five states this year, with the biggest support likely to be in Maryland.

Sixty-three percent of potential voters plan to favor the referendum, according to a poll published Monday by Baltimore Sun Media and the University of Baltimore, while twenty-five percent are opposed to the reform and twelve percent are still unsure.

The “Vote Yes On 4” campaign can rest easy with such a large lead. And it has strong majorities of both Democrats (69%) and Republicans (54%), as well as independents and those supporting other parties (35%).

The poll was conducted from October 20-23, and it had a margin of error of +/-3.1 percentage points based on the responses of 562 Democratic, 247 Republican, and 180 unaffiliated likely voters.

Those laws would make it possible for individuals to legally buy and possess up to 1.5 ounces of cannabis, according to an article in The Hill. Possession of up to 2.5 ounces would no longer result in criminal consequences under the proposed law. People over the age of 21 would be permitted to cultivate up to two plants for their own use, as well as give away their cannabis crop for free.

Inmates presently serving time for offenses that would be legalized by the proposed law would be eligible for resentencing, and those with prior convictions would have their records sealed automatically. The law allows those convicted of possession with the intent to distribute to seek expungement once three years have passed from the date of their final court appearance.

A statewide campaign to get voters in Maryland to approve legalizing marijuana was launched last month, spearheaded by former NFL player Eugene Monroe.

Here is the precise ballot text for Question 4:

Do you support making it legal in Maryland on or after July 1, 2023, for those over the age of 21 to use cannabis?
