First Cannabis Associates Degree Program in Illinois at Community College

Olive-Harvey College in Pullman, Illinois will offer a first-of-its-kind Associate Degree in Applied Cannabis Studies. The program will include courses in hemp horticulture, cannabis and the law, and basic chemistry. It is designed for students who want to work in the cannabis industry, either as growers or product manufacturers.

The college has set up a state-of-the-art greenhouse on campus that will help students grow and maintain hemp as part of the program. As many as 140 students can be enrolled in the program at a time. After completing the two-year program, students could move on to other STEM-related degrees at a four-year college or university.

There are now 11 community colleges in Illinois that are offering cannabis-related courses, but not yet full degree programs. These schools include Southwestern Illinois College, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and the University of Illinois Springfield.

Although these courses offer a good foundation for those interested in pursuing a career in the cannabis industry, they do not yet offer a full degree program. This means that students who want to pursue a career in cannabis will need to look elsewhere for now.
