$10M in Medical Cannabis Sales in IA

In 2022, Medical Cannabis Sales in Iowa reached $10 million

Iowa’s medical cannabis sales in 2022 were $10.2 million, despite the state’s small population and the fact that just 5 shops were open at the time.

Before recent changes to the law, Iowa’s medical cannabis program was one of the hardest to use in the United States.

The Medical Cannabidiol Board of Iowa recently released a report showing that the total number of active patients in the state had increased to 14,666 by the end of November of last year, from 7,865 in early December 2021. From late 2021 to late 2022, the number of certified professionals increased significantly, going from 1,603 to 1,920.

In November alone, 8,218 people visited one of the five dispensaries. Between December 2021 ($149.21) and November of last year, the average price declined to $131.75.

According to a report in the Hemp Gazette, its total sales for the year 2022 amounted to $10,170,483. In terms of the kinds of products that patients have been purchasing, they have been:

  • Vaporizable: 66.4%
  • Capsule/tablet: 24.6%
  • Tincture: 6.4%
  • Topical: 2.5%

There are now two licensed producers in Iowa who can make products for the oral, topical, nebulizable, suppository, and vaporizable markets. The idea of legalizing smokable medical cannabis in the state has not advanced.
